The premiere of the concert program and album "Words of Fire" will take place as part of the Riga A Cappella Festival’s series, "New Choral Sounds."
"Words of Fire" is a new program of contemporary works by Latvian composers centered around the theme of fire. Using Latvian folk song lyrics and poems by Latvian poets, the compositions reveal fire as a protector, a force that burns away evil and excess, a purifier, and a giver of life.
The premiere of "Words of Fire" brings together six professional singers from various eras of the vocal group "Anima Solla." The initiative for the program came from Mārīte Puriņa, the artistic director of "Anima Solla." The new concert program "Words of Fire" was recorded in collaboration with the music publisher "Musica Baltica" in 2024, and it will also be available in sheet music form.
"Collaboration with each composer has been a significant step in the creative development of Anima Solla," says artistic director Mārīte Puriņa. "Anima Solla" has embarked on its journey as a professional vocal ensemble, and "Words of Fire" is the first project to unite singers from different periods of the group.
Since its founding in 1998, "Anima Solla" has inspired the creation of numerous new works and contributed to the development and promotion of contemporary Latvian vocal music. The group is the winner of many international competitions, holds the title of World Choir Games champion, and has won the Grand Prize of the Latvian Song and Dance Festival's Vocal Ensemble Competition three times.
From November 6 to 9, 2024, the Riga A Cappella Festival will take place with a new theme: New Choral Sounds. The festival will feature premieres of new works and programs, with a focus on unique musical projects and innovative performances. The main events and concerts of the festival will be held in the Great Hall of the SPORTA 2 Quarter.
Since 2013, the Riga A Cappella Festival has been shaping a new identity for the vocal music movement, presenting the tradition of a cappella singing as a modern and contemporary art form. The festival has featured many renowned artists, including "The Real Group," "The Swingles," "Postyr," "Solala," "Gentlemen Singers," "Didgori," "Anima Solla," "Framest," "Latvian Voices," the Riga Gospel Choir, "Harmony4Riga," the choirs "Kamēr...," "Balsis," "Austrums," "Sola," and others. The festival also hosts seminars, masterclasses, and industry meetings, creating a platform for dialogue on current vocal music topics. A cappella music, highlighted in the festival, is a marvel created by human voices, and the energy that flows from this music is always powerfully moving. A cappella singing is at the heart of Latvia's Song Festival tradition and has been a symbol of Latvian identity since ancient times, continuing its creative search in modern music.
SPORTA2 Quarter is a dynamic, ever-evolving creative hub and a beloved place for enjoying art, culture, and various events.
The concert program is supported by the Riga City Council, SPORTA 2 Quarter, VSIA "Latvian Concerts," RKTMC "Mazā ģilde," Studio Imagine, AKKA/LAA, the State Culture Capital Foundation, and the publisher "Musica Baltica."
