Let's explore Mārtiņi on 10 November at 20.00 in the Valmiermuiža beer lounge with the folklore band “Dandari”!
Mārtiņi marks the end of the economic year, people and the land prepare for winter. Folk songs also say that Mārtiņi is coming and the earth is sounding - because it is frozen. If the work is done, you can go to the neighbours to celebrate, but in such a way that the neighbours don't get to know you. On Mārtiņi, young people dress up and go around asking for presents. Those who were lazy (did not dance) were also given spanking. In the past, a cock was sacrificed for the welfare of the horses, but instead we will teach a dance based on a well-known folk song. The dance is called “Where are you going little cock”. With Mārtiņi came the processions of masks, gypsies, and vigils, and the need for sturdy shoes, which is when the dance “I plait the stitches, I twist the cords” will be performed.
The LU dance folklore band “Dandari” has been active for more than 40 years and has released 3 albums of music - a disc of dances and two discs of quadrilles (multi-couple dances) and their latest album "Divatā”, dedicated to the couple dances that “Dandari” plays and dances at events and international festivals.
Tickets: 10 EUR. Children under 6 years of age are free.
The Valmiermuiža beer kitchen will have prepared delicious food, brews and the special annual beer “Mārtiņi” to refresh the enthusiastic dancers.
