carry on Rigas Cirks, transcending its past, present and future
An intriguing performance-installation that each time is presented in a very different way depending on the place, be it the contemporary arts museum in Leuven, a huge culture complex in Tokyo, or a historical circus building in Riga.

ABOUT THE INSTALLATION-PERFORMANCE “CARRY ON”
How does a space produce or affect movement? And how does movement, in turn, affect space? “carry on” is a site-specific production, entirely refigured for every new location where it takes place. In collaboration with performers, actors and sound designers, Heine Avdal and Yukiko Shinozaki stage a series of imaginative interventions in rooms, corridors and obscure hidden corners. The audience is invited to zoom in on strange details and on the visible traces of the site’s past and present use. Slowly and subtly the building is transformed into a fascinating alternative version of itself.
“carry on” is a special invitation to carry out a spatial investigation. Avdal and Shinozaki take small groups of visitors on a guided tour through an architectural environment where they find remainders of former actions, simultaneously leaving traces of their own. While this can take place in very different kinds of spaces, the project’s elementary characteristic is that the tour is carried on by bodily actions relating to unexpected discoveries. Gradually immerging deeper into the back rooms, vestibules, and interstices of the respective building, the excursion enters areas which usually remain inaccessible, hidden or unnoticed.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Heine Avdal has been active in the fields of contemporary dance, performance, video and visual arts. He questions how spatial conventions affect the way we experience and move through private/public spaces. Considering people’s preconceptions of spatial conventions and through slight shifts, or manipulations he searches for unexpected intersections between different components of a space.
Yukiko Shinozaki is a choreographer and dancer. Her work focuses on internal complexities and contradictions of the body. The process of transformation takes an important role in her movement vocabulary: through subtle shifts and manipulations, familiar actions slowly transform into an unfamiliar realm/landscape.
Avdal and Shinozaki’s work is concerned with “performativity” and allows for an open interpretation of movement as a heterogeneous combination of a variety of media. Consequently, they draw on a broad range of disciplines and expertise. They create projects in both theatrical and non-theatrical environments / spaces such as offices, hotels, supermarkets, etc. Through interaction with those familiar spaces and by treating them slightly differently, they suggest to rethink the notion of the everyday itself.
In 2000 Avdal and Shinozaki formed their own company ‘fieldworks’.
